On a typical day at the Hyde Park Maverick gas station, drivers are able to fuel up as other customers head for a fountain drink or a snack—but they can't buy beer. Why not? Well, that's a question Maverick is asking Hyde Park officials.

The Hyde Park Maverick, like most gas stations, would like to sell beer. The problem is, there's currently no city ordinance under which Maverick can be granted a license—meaning Maverick can't sell beer.

But that might soon change. A new alcohol ordinance has been proposed and is currently in the draft stages. Maverick is the lone licensee.

A national society focused on the philosophy and theology of Mormons will meet in Logan this weekend. Kerry Bringhurst speaks with Philip Barlow, Utah State University's Director of Religious Studies, about the increased interest in the teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Officials announced on Monday that five prescribed burns are planned this fall at the Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument. Public access to the monument may be restricted and smoke may be present, but no roads are expected to close. Those fires could start as soon as Saturday.

A separate series of prescribed fires was announced Tuesday for the Hells Hollow area, fourteen miles east of Logan. Those fires may occur anytime in October or November, depending on weather. No major road delays are expected.

The number of deaths at Grand Canyon National Park are down sharply in 2012. As the summer season wraps up, 8 people have died this year, compared with 21 last year - the highest figure in a decade.

The 10-year average is 13 deaths per year. Although the park sees some suicides each year, most deaths are accidental including falls, drownings, and heatstroke.

Dr. Tom Myers worked full time at the Grand Canyon clinic for 22 years. He says 90% of the deaths result from people "who overestimate their own ability and underestimate the canyon."

Saturday is World Alzheimer's Action Day. In Utah, caregivers will hear from experts at a free Memory Loss Awareness Conference and town hall meeting in St. George. They'll discuss research and therapy techniques for people with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia.
