Where to After the Tour de France? The Tour of Utah!

The 7th annual Tour of Utah bike race is currently wheeling its way through the state. Steve Miller, the Tour's president, spoke with UPR's Brianna Bodily about the race's steady growth in size and reputation.

Miller says the race is very comparable to the Tour de France.

Utahns Suing the EPA Over Los Angeles-Style Pollution Levels

Concerned with increasing levels of air pollution in the Uintah Basin, a coalition of public health and conservation groups is suing the Environmental Protection Agency.

Dr. Brian Munch, of Utah Physicians for a Healthy Climate and the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance, told UPR's Brianna Bodily that the complaint made asserts that for several years now dangerously high levels of ozone have been recorded in the Uintah Basin:

Pioneer Day Fire Restrictions

Governor Herbert has issued a warning reminding citizens to use caution and follow fire restrictions closely while celebrating Pioneer Day this year.

Although each city is responsible for its own fireworks restrictions and safety, all areas outside of incorporated areas are still under a full ban on fireworks. The only exceptions include 1 or 2 areas inside Salt Lake County.

Innovation and Collaboration Key to Conserving Water in Utah

This summer's unusually hot and dry weather means that fire is a disaster Utahns are becoming well acquainted with. Todd Crowl, a professor in Utah State University's Department of Watershed Sciences, says the changing climate combined with Utah's rapid increase in water consumption points to the immediate need for new water practices.

"All of that says we're going to have real serious issues and challenges in Utah as well as most of the West and event the Midwest in terms of future water, water availability, and water sustainability."

Volunteers Gather to Move Thousands of Books

Hundreds of volunteers will form a human chain to move another 100,000 books to the new Uintah County library in Vernal.   Money from mineral leases for oil and natural gas development in Utah paid for the new library.  But Uintah County commissioner Darlene Burns said getting the books moved is requiring a different energy. About 300 volunteers handed book after book down the line Saturday to move the first 50,000.  Burns said twice that many books will be moved in the next few weeks to complete the project.

Stephen Covey Dies in Hospital at 79

Stephen R. Covey, author of “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People,” died in Idaho three months after a serious bicycle accident in Utah.

Ryan Cameron of Covey’s consulting firm, Franklin Covey, said the author died at 2:15 a.m. Monday at a hospital in Idaho Falls, Idaho amid complications from the accident.  He was 79.

In addition to writing three other books that sold more than a million copies each, Covey was Utah State University’s first Jon M. Huntsman presidential chair in leadership.
